The Inspiration Board: link party spotlight ~37~

I had a little glitch in my linky code this week. If you came to link up early Tuesday morning and the link tool was missing, I hope you were able to come back and join the fun. If not, there’s always next week. For those of you who were able to link up and for those who came to visit, thank you, thank you! I truly appreciate each and every visit, comment and link.

As we say goodbye to pink & red, Cupid and hearts, we can look forward to warmer days and the variety of projects that spring will inspire.

For now, here are a few projects in the spotlight this week.

Unused space becomes functional with a built-in desk by It’s Overflowing. A perfect little command center in the heart of the house.

This was a “duh” moment for me. I have tons of shells. I have paint. Why didn’t I think of painting them? Home Sweet Homemade cheered herself up after a craft fail by making these shells extra pretty with pearly white paint.

I love this decoupaged table by Design Megillah. The gold and white striped tissue paper is such a pretty choice and the glass top gives the table a elegant, finished look.

This is a great organization project by Eat Sleep Decorate. Get rid of all the bulky DVD boxes and skinny them down by using CD sleeves. The movie covers were folded in half and slipped into the sleeve for easy identification and then alphabetized with cute ABC dividers.

Darling hot chocolate and crafting party by Ode to Inspiration. Hot chocolate, cookies, cake and crafting – my kind of party. There are so many pretty details you’ll need to click over and check them all out.

This is the happiest and cheeriest entryway I’ve ever seen. Meeha Meeha painted the wall a sunshine yellow and then hand painted the retro dots on the other walls. This would surely brighten anyone’s day.

All my favorite breakfast items gathered together in a yummy flaky cup. Oh my goodness! Bacon, egg and cheese breakfast cups by Adventures of our Family.

What little girl wouldn’t love these lace crowns by Rook No. 17? These would be great for dress up, costumes, birthday parties and more! The best part – Rook No. 17 shows us a nice short cut using the microwave.

Great photography art by Little Green Bow. A trip around the city captured the letters L-O-V-E in different scenes. A thoughtful gift and wall art that can be done even if you’re on a budget.

A lovely way to display buttons. Shabby Art Boutique used about 100 vintage buttons to make this pretty vintage button ball. The varying shades of white buttons are so pretty but any color would make a pretty display.

Etceteras: capiz shell tidbit stand

Even though it’s the middle of February, the beach, warm days, shells, starfish and coral are on my mind. I can’t wait for warmer days!

I found these capiz shell plates at the dollar store and bought four of them. They’re decorative pieces so my plan was to use them as décor and for projects. Now I'm thinking I need to go back and get some more of them. Even though you can't eat off of the, they would look pretty under a soup bowl. Definitely need to get more.

The first project that came to mind was a cake stand or tidbit stand. I know the blogosphere has inspired us with just about every type of plate and candle holder combination imaginable but there’s always room for one more.

I used a plain frosted glass candle holder and added mother of pearl shells to complement the beachy-shell look. The shells already had holes in them {they were upcycled from a pair of sandals} so I strung them onto embroidery thread and which I wrapped around the stem.

The plate and candle holder are held together with E-6000 glue.

DIY cake stands or tidbit stands are so fun to make. I would love to know who actually came up with the original brilliant idea.

Growing Your Blog: pinterest

If you’re not familiar with Pinterest, brace yourself and start using one of the best tools to come along in a long time. Pinterest is a place to bookmark your favorite sites or pages from your favorite sites. However, instead of bookmarking or favoriting the URL, you pin an image from the site onto one of your pin boards.

You can name your boards and group them into categories; crafts, home décor, recipes, places I want to visit – whatever you want to pin. This is a snapshot of one of my boards.

That’s the basic idea of Pinterest – pinning things that you want to reference later or want to share. A visual bookmarking site. However, an interesting thing happened along the way.

Pinterest has turned into a powerful tool for bloggers. Suddenly, Pinterest is the number one referral source for my blog. Here’s how it works; someone visits your blog and pins an image from one of your posts. The image links back to your blog and the pin gets repinned multiple times. The result is multiple hits to your blog.

More and more bloggers and blog readers admittedly are becoming addicted to Pinterest and there is a lot of potential for visits to your blog.

Here are some ways to encourage pinning and blog traffic:

Add Pinterest buttons to your blog {follow me on Pinterest) and posts {pin it}.
Keep and maintain a pin board dedicated to your own projects. You should be aware that Pinterest Etiquette frowns on pure self promotion. Here’s what they say: Avoid Self Promotion - Pinterest is designed to curate and share things you love. If there is a photo or project you’re proud of, pin away! However, try not to use Pinterest purely as a tool for self-promotion.
Join Pinterest groups, parties and challenges. There has been a surge of these activities lately. Link parties and challenges where you make something you saw on Pinterest often times with a winner being selected. As with link parties, these activities could bring more viewers to your blog.
Follow other user’s pinboards and gain more followers of your boards.
Pin responsibly. Pinning and repinning can sometimes get sloppy. Whenever possible, pin from the original source just as you would want one of your images linked back to your site.

For me, Pinterest first and foremost is still a way for me to visually catalog inspirational images and projects. The icing on the cake has been the traffic it has generated for me.

How much time do you spend online? As a blogger, I spend a lot of time visiting websites, researching information, looking for inspiration, shopping and more. I have to admit that I’m a note taker. I try to stay organized and keep notes in an idea book or a to-do list but often times the scraps of paper and post its start to take over.

That’s where Clipix.com can come to the rescue. I’m definitely more of a visual person and often times don’t even remember if I’ve bookmarked a page or where the little scraps of paper are. With Clipix I can keep all my favorites and bookmarks neatly organized on clipboards.

You can customize your privacy settings so you can share your clips with everyone, your friends or only yourself.

Some great features include the Syncboards where you can create and clip with friends and family in real time. There’s also a drag and drop feature to rearrange your boards onto Multiboards. With Multiboards, you can group multiple clipboards by category. This would be a great feature for some of my crafting categories. I’ve already created a general project clipboard but I’m planning to create Multiboards with categories like, paper crafts, sewing, printables, décor and gardening.

You can use Clipix for so much more. A board for vacation ideas, kid’s activities, articles you plan to read later and the list goes on. There's also an iPhone app so you can clip on the go.

Thank you to everyone who linked up a project or came by to visit. I’m really enjoying discovering new blogs and new sources for creative inspiration. The projects amaze and inspire me week after week.

Here are a few the spotlight this week.

Check out this mantel by Stay at Home-ista. The artwork above the mantel is stunning but the interesting object on the mantel is what caught my eye. At first I thought they were pieces of wood but they’re actually books with the covers faced toward the wall. A beautiful use of everyday objects to create a captivating visual.

I love both of these ideas to change the look of a bookcase or hutch.

{left} Salvage Savvy fixed up an old laminate bookcase with a coat of paint and wall decals. Wall decals are a great idea, especially if you’re like me and a bit stencil-challenged.

{right} Remodelaholic quickly changed out the look of her hutch with wrapping paper. The red pattern completely changes the look and you could change your color scheme as often as you wanted.

Home Sweet Homemade made this great driftwood candle holder. But what really warmed my heart and made me smile was the fact that she won the candles on one of my giveaways. Looking at the driftwood makes me long for summer.

Mmmmm. White hot chocolate by The Seven Year Cottage. This looks absolutely delicious. The white chocolate shavings, sprig of mint and little cookie are perfect touches.

Darling baby shoes by Mrs. Meyer Musing. I’m a sucker for polka dots and the simple fabric flowers and grosgrain ribbon are so sweet.

Shabby Art Boutique teaches us how to age fabric using Parisian essence {found in the baking aisle}. Look how darling her muslin bags look drying in her lavender garden.

I’m craving chocolate right now and this would really do the trick. Snicker cupcakes by The Real Housewives of Riverton. It’s the little details like the chocolate heart topper that really make things special.

A beautiful chair renovation by Woven Home. This truly was a labor of love because the chair had seen better days. All cleaned up with fresh paint and gorgeous fabric and it looks stunning.

I’ve seen a lot of cake pops – we’ve all seen a lot of cake pops – but these cake pops by Ode to Inspiration are my favorite. The icing is perfectly simple and so neatly done. The black and white straw holders and homemade tags are the perfect complement. Beautifully done!

Dear Lucy {craftberry bush}, You amaze me. Can I come over and craft with you? Or, if you’d prefer I’ll just sit quietly and watch you create beautiful projects like these water color paper roses. Love, Carolyn {homework}

I featured a few Kindle covers in recent posts because I’ve been on the hunt for a diy cover for my new Kindle.

Most of the covers that I’ve seen required sewing and I wasn’t sure I could pull that off. I decided to try a no-sew book style cover instead.

Here's what I came up with. The inspiration for my Kindle cover came from a book upcycle project that Rook No. 17 shared.

Here’s how I made my Kindle cover:

Start with an old book.
Cut out the book pages with an X-acto knife and trim the ragged edges.
Cut a piece of fabric larger than your book cover.
Use spray mount to adhere the fabric to the book cover and wrap the fabric edges to the inside. Cut the corners so that they are mitered.
Cut pieces of felt to pad the inside and cover the raw fabric edges. Use spray mount to adhere the felt to the inside.
Create a book spine using a piece of ribbon or coordinating piece of fabric. Again use spray mount to adhere the ribbon to the spine. You can use craft glue to reinforce the edges of the ribbon where they meet.

Once the book cover is dry, add a button and piece of elastic to create a closure. I used a vintage wood button and you guessed it, a pony tail holder. To secure the button and elastic, I used E-6000 glue and let it dry overnight.

The Kindle fits perfectly inside the book cover but I realized it could still slip out of the bottom.

I added another piece of elastic – and yes, it’s one of those elastic headbands.

I’m thrilled with my new Kindle cover. It will protect the device and when I’m not using it I can put it up on the bookshelf.

Upcycling: copper can planter

I’ve been saving this metal hanger to use on a project. The hanger originally wrapped around a votive holder.

The glass votive is long gone but the hanger has been waiting outside, aging and rusting and waiting for a new purpose.

This humble tin can fit perfectly in the holder so I gave it a few coats of copper metallic paint.

A plastic baggie filled with dirt holds the succulent clippings that will hopefully root.

I'll leave this little planter outside and see what happens. I'm hoping it will begin to rust and age but keep most of the copper paint. If not, I can always start over with another can.

Inkling: watercolor valentine cards

I’ve been playing with my watercolors and painted some Valentine cards.

Not a single lesson – can you tell? {ha ha}

My original plan was just plain watercolor cards. I painted them and even took the pictures for this post. I know watercolor is supposed to look “misty” but my cards seemed a little too watered down and plain.

I cut the cards into smaller pieces and played around with different background papers to jazz up the cards a bit. I settled on one of my favorite go-to recycled supplies – security envelopes.

I’ve mentioned before how fascinated I am with the different security envelope patterns. I have quite the stash of these envelopes. I save them from the junk mail and bills and I even have my mom saving them for me. Needless to say, I have quite a few envelopes to choose from.

I love the pink tones of the watercolor against the stark grey and black security envelope paper.

Even if you don’t paint, watercolor is fun and easy. You can water down the color or make them more vibrant by using less water. To make a free form watercolor like the first photo of this post, wet your paper first and them just dab the paint brush onto the paper. The watercolor bleeds onto the wet paper and makes beautiful designs.

A few days ago, I posted about game day finger food and of course, included a simple avocado snack. Today, I want to share a little more avocado love with you because I really do love avocados. The Inspiration Board: link party spotlight ~35~

Thank you to everyone who linked up a project this week on the Inspiration Board. It’s getting harder and harder to pick features as the party grows. All the projects are inspirational and I truly appreciate that I’m on your party list.

Here are a few in the spotlight this week.

A beautiful paper project by Sandy’s Space. A carousel gift holder in a hexagonal shape. I love the pearl embellishment on the roof that mimics carnival lights.

Such a sweet and simple gift idea from Organized Living Solutions. Use special markers to make a cute Valentine mug for someone special. Making the letters out of a cross stitch pattern gives the mug a sweet homespun look and would be more forgiving if you're free-handing the letters.

Meijos Joy made these puffy flowers out of leftover fabric. I love the sparkly fabric and pearl accents. These would make great pincushion gifts too.

Heart shaped french toast by Will Cook for Smiles. Imagine waking up to these for breakfast. Regular french toast would be a treat for me but these are topped with strawberries, pomegranate seeds and powdered sugar.

Creatively Living reveals her master bedroom renovation. The room was painted four years ago and little by little renovated. Beautiful dreamy colors and pretty details - a true labor of love.

The Answer is Chocolate brings a new color palette to a Valentine’s card. A splash of sunny yellow looks so cheery and will definitely stand out among all the pink and red cards.

I still love all things made with chalkboard paint and this frame by The Moody Fashionista is darling. Little rhinestones frame the heart and love messages can be erased and updated.

Leftover fabric from a drop cloth project is used to make these cute Valentine hearts by Make it Give it. The little hearts are filled with sweet orange essential and lavender.

Amazing pendants by Lady with the Red Rocker. Would you believe these are made out of salt dough? And you'll be surprised at what she used tomake the impressions. Beautifully crafted with the simplest of ingredients.

Safe kitchen knife storage by Another Bright Idea. The containers are painted and embellished with paper and ribbon. The knives are stored in bamboo sticks. I definitely need to do this – my knife drawer is absurdly dangerous.

Just Another Hang Up took a plain journal and covered it in darling fabric for her granddaughter. The applique in coordinating fabric makes it extra special and I'm sure it will be used and cherished.

Good Taste: game day finger food

Here in the United States a big day is coming up. It’s not listed as a national holiday but feasts will be prepared and many, many calories consumed. We’re talking chips and dip, pizzas, wings, sandwiches and plenty of beverages to wash it all down. Yes, it’s Super Bowl Sunday time.

I like my share of game day traditional food but I this year I’m going to add a few prettier food items to the menu. These are more my style and although the calorie count may be the same, I’ll feel better having a few crackers rather than consuming a bowl of chips.

I made these simple crackers with a few items on hand. Havarti cheese, sliced avocado and bacon. Like I said, the calorie count is probably the same as nachos but it looks prettier!

Here are a few dishes from my archives that I might make.

Mango salsa – this is really refreshing especially after a few spicy chicken wings.

Shrimp Salsa – stock up on plenty of tortilla chips because this is always a hit.

Caprese Sticks – refreshing and tasty.

Graham Cracker Toffee Bark. So yummy and bite sized. If you’re having friends over, hide a few for later because these will be gone before halftime.

Pecan Pie Tarts. Little bite sized portions of pecan pie goodness. The guys might think these look too frilly for football but I bet they’ll like them.

Whether you’re having traditional game day food, pretty food or a mix of both, it will be a fun day of football, funny commercials and probably a few Tums.

Do you use Picnik for photo editing? Picnik is Google’s photo editing tool and many, many bloggers use it for it’s ease of use and variety of editing options. My go-to photo editing tool is Picasa {another Google program} but when I want to do something a little bit more with my photos, Picnik is a great source.

Unfortunately, it was just announced that Picnik is closing in April. Photo editing can be done on Google+ but I have to confess, I haven’t checked out Google+ yet.

In the meantime, Picnik is offering their premium tools free of charge. So if you’re not a premium subscriber, you can take advantage of the fun tools for a few more months.

Here are some examples of Picnik’s capabilities.

I snapped this photo from my backyard - it’s my neighbor’s tree. The photo above is the original photo. Although the sky was really blue that day, my camera settings may have enhanced the blue because that sky looks a little intense.

I uploaded the original photo to Picnik and played around. This effect is called 1960s. I love the calmed down tone in the photo.

Film grain is a fun effect. Before I added the film grain, I played around with the color and saturation.

Adding Duo Tone completely changes the photo. You can’t even tell that there is sky in the background. For this duo tone, the first color is blue and second color is white. The combinations using the Picnik color palette are endless.

For this photo I completely covered the photo in a rectangular shape and added a light shade of peach to the shape. I then made the peach shade more transparent and I loved the result. So soft and dreamy.

Note: the very first photo in this post was edited using the rectangular shape with a medium shade of green and then I used the softening tool on the entire photo. It reminds me of old fashioned wall paper or a table linen.

Upcycling: lace water bottle

I was inspired to make this lace vase after seeing Decoupaging with Lace on Urban Comfort. For my version, I used a very tall bottle that some fancy water came in. This is actually a double upcycle project because the lace I used was an old curtain valance.

To make a lace bottle you can wrap the entire bottle in the lace or use strips of the lace depending on how you want your finished product to look. Apply Mod Podge to your bottle and wrap the fabric around the bottle.

The length of the valance fit the bottle almost perfectly and I was able to use the lacy edge at the top of the bottle. Since the neck of the bottle is narrower, I cut the slits in the fabric and layered the slits around the neck.

Once the fabric is completely dry, add another coat of Mod Podge over the fabric.

Add flowers and enjoy your delicate lace vase.

I think these would work perfectly as budget-friendly wedding centerpieces. So if you’re planning a wedding, start saving glass bottles and be on the hunt for lace remnants.

Beautiful photography of snowberries by Nifty Thrifty Things. I’ve never seen snowberries before but I’m now obsessed with them. Vanessa of Nifty Thrifty Things has a regular Friday Floral post and the photography is always stunning.

Faux Bois (false wood) is really in style now and I love this faux bois jar project by Max and Me. This technique has been on my to-do list and I’m going to dig out my fluffy paint and make one asap.

That’s My Letter repurposed a loaf pan into a cute pincushion complete with heart pins. A sweet Valentine gift for someone who sews.

Beat the winter blues with these pretty winter blue bath salts by Homespun with Love. A beautiful intense blue bath salt scented with grapefruit essential oil – how could you not be cheered up.

Little Lovelies created these ombre cross stitched hearts that are so sweet. The original pattern is available on her post.

Cranberry Almond Pumpkin Bread by Will Cook for Smiles. Nothing says cozy like a piece of homemade bread.

This rag doll by Farm Wife Journal is precious. I love the blue pony tails and matching doll quilt. A wonderful homemade gift.

Sweetheart Glitter Cottage by Sew Can Do. Such pretty pink details on this cottage. I would love a whole village of these little houses as a centerpiece.

Beautiful, dreamy organza flower by One Perfect Day. The flower looks lighter than air and I love the contrast of the bold leaf stitches.

Simply stunning! Craftberry Bush always has wonderful projects and this wire wrapped heart is one of my favorites. Perfection!

Sew & Tell: vintage lace

My mom has been cleaning out closets and she recently found a bag of my grandmother’s crocheted lace, doilies and other goodies that she gave to me.

I can’t imagine the hours and hours of work that went into each piece. The crocheting was done with very fine thread and we estimate that some of the pieces are 75 years old.

These were the threads that were in the bag. The small ball of off white thread is marked 12 cents.

This order postcard for name tape was also in the bag.

I’m sure this piece was intended to be a table cloth or table runner. It’s the largest piece and like so many, it’s unfinished. Some things never change, I know I have tons of unfinished projects in my stash.

This lace edging has darkened with age. I’m going to try to gently hand wash the pieces and store them safely to pass down.

I believe this lace was done with a method called tatting. I added a regular sewing pin to the picture so you could see how small the knots and loops are.

Beautiful round granny squares.

More lace edging. The little vintage iron is a miniature doll or play iron. It measures approximately 2.5” in length.

I imagine evenings spent without television and computers making these beautiful lace creations. But even without all those distractions, I’m not sure I could master this type of handiwork. It’s really amazing!

Celebrations: valentine fabric tags

I finally had a chance to make good use of some fun Valentine rubber stamps that I have.

I used the stamps on fabric to make some tags or labels for Valentine gifts. Rather than use an ink pad, I used craft paint. For the heart stamp, I used Plaid Folkart in Deep Tomato Red. To apply the paint to the rubber stamp, I used a Martha Stewart foam pouncer and dabbed the paint directly on to the rubber stamp. When using this method, do a few tests on scrap fabric until you’re sure of the right amount of paint to apply.

This pretty red box gets a custom label with a rubber stamped piece of muslin, corrugated cardboard and twine. Now I just need to fill it with homemade fudge, toffee bark or some other yummy treat.

An old mason jar is ready to be filled with “confectionary candy”. This label was created using Martha Stewart Craft Paint in Pink Dahlia.

A bright red composition book is turned into a fun journal or idea book. These would make great teacher or classmate Valentine gifts.

This plain vase is now Valentine ready. Wouldn’t short red roses look pretty in this vase? Maybe I’ll get some for Valentine’s Day.

I love how these turned out and to me, using craft paints is easier than an ink pad.

Fresh Look: breakfast room prints

One of my goals for the new year is to freshen up some areas of our home.

There’s a narrow wall on each side of the bay window in our breakfast room and these prints have been hanging there forever. There are two of them – one on each side of the bay window and they fit perfectly. But is was time to freshen up the look.

I painted the frames white and used pressed ferns for an overall cleaner and brighter look.

Instead of cutting a new matte board, I placed the new paper on top of the old matte leaving just the edge of the original border showing. Much easier than cutting new matte board.

The difference is amazing. The new prints brighten up the entire wall. I tried to get a photo of the entire bay window and both prints but there was too much sunlight coming in through the window – which I guess is the point of a pretty bay window.

Now that my first “fresh look” project for 2012 is done, I can’t wait to freshen up more areas.

Pretty, romantic, vintage and just plain gorgeous dessert table by Homespun with Love. Brilliant use of thrift store linens and ribbons to make the garland backdrop. The details are absolutely lovely.

This coffee table was definitely saved by love! Saved by Love Creations rescued a sad coffee table and transformed it into a clean and bright piece. Beautiful stencil work on the table top.

I love this simple diy by Nifty Thrifty Things. Make your own baker’s twine using embroidery floss. I can’t wait to try this and add a rainbow of baker’s twine colors to my stash.

Silver Boxes shows us how to make industrial style letters using everyday items. Unique and inventive – I can think of a lot of fun projects using this technique. The first thing that comes to mind is to spell out EAT for my kitchen - fun!

I’ve come to the conclusion that there isn’t a piece of bark that I’ve met that I haven’t loved. And this lemon bark by Moments with the Montanos looks like it would melt in your mouth. The best part – the recipe is super easy.

A personal and sentimental anniversary gift by TV Designs. A family tree with the couple’s initials stitched in the middle of the tree rings and the children’s initials on the leaves. Very original and well done – a true keepsake.

52 Mantels creates a chalkboard tabletop and beautiful display of objects. Great fun to be able to write on the table top around all the objects. I’m also in love with the yellow and green vase at the end of the table (which match my kitchen).

This Green Muenster grilled cheese sandwich by Everything Under the Moon elevates grilled cheese to a new level. Muenster cheese, guacamole, and applewood bacon… oh. my. goodness. I just keep staring at the picture because I want one…now!

What a sweet pillowcase by Yesterday on Tuesday for a special sweetheart. Using fabric scraps and heat n’ bond you could change out the look of your pillow quickly and easily for different seasons.

This little girl’s room by Desire Empire is darling. A palette of pinks accents complement the white walls, bedding and furniture and create a pretty in pink space.

Here’s a sweet little project that your little crafters can make for Valentine’s Day.

Make some simple Valentine Cupid’s arrows out of items on hand like twigs and felt. Use craft glue to adhere the felt arrow heads and feathers to the twig.

Add baker’s twine or even attach a sweet message. For little crafters who are too young for twigs, you can use straws instead of twigs.

Celebrations: valentine vases {pink & glittery}

Do you decorate for Valentine’s Day? I usually don’t go all out but a little splash of red or pink is always fun.

I found this bead garland in the Christmas clearance aisle. It was so ridiculously pink and glittery I had to have it for Valentine’s Day.

I unstrung the beads and used them to decorate a few plain vases.

For this vase, I glued the pink matte beads around the rim.

This vase had a rim, so I strung the glitter beads on a piece of wire and wrapped it under the rim.

I have very few flowers in the garden right now but I was able to scrounge up a few pink Camellias and some Jasmine for the small vase.

I still have a lot of beads left, but for now, I think this is enough pink.

Etceteras: winter scarf wreath

I’m always in awe of those beautiful yarn wrapped wreaths. You know, the ones where the yarn is wrapped around the wreath form so neatly and precisely.

Here’s my version. I used a winter scarf wrapped around a wreath form.

The scarf was just the right length to go around the form – with the scarf fringe dangling at the bottom. I used a rubber band to tie off the bottom.

A little greenery brightens up the masculine tones of the scarf and finishes off the wreath.

The best part is, the scarf can be unwound, washed and used again.

It’s summer in Australia. So Desire Empire’s beachy white summer holiday mantel is right in season down under. Beautiful shells, driftwood and bits of décor make me long for summer.

Etceteras: new year organizing {fabric binder}

I love binders – and since I’m still organizing and cleaning I thought I’d pretty up some binders that weren’t being used.

It’s really easy to take a plain old binder and cover it in fabric.

Lay your binder flat and cut a piece of fabric about an inch larger than the binder. Glue or spray mount the fabric to the outside of the binder and fold over the raw edges. Ooops – I didn’t cut my fabric very straight.

Glue a piece of pretty scrapbook paper or cardstock to the insides covering the raw fabric edges. I chose to use scrap corrugated cardboard just to mix things up a bit. I also added string wrapped around the cardboard so I could tuck in bits of paper or clippings.

I plan to use this binder a lot so I don’t mind that the corrugated cardboard isn’t perfect. Plus the thickness of the cardboard will add some durability.

Add some pretty divider tabs or make them out of scrapbook paper.

Do you still use binders for recipes and magazine clippings? I know some people have gone completely high tech with recipes on laptops and tablets and ideas on Pinterest. But I love how pretty this low tech binder looks.

Etceteras: new year organizing {craft box}

I’m still on the organization train. Don’t you love looking at photos of beautiful crafts rooms all neat and organized? I know, me neither – it just makes me feel like such a slob.

Like many of you, I have limited space. Craft supplies, fabric, and crafting tools fight for space with regular office equipment and paperwork. I try to be tidy and keep things organized in boxes.

I usually work a week or two in advance on my projects. If I have an idea, I start pulling out supplies and that’s when things start piling up. I may be working on several projects at a time while finished projects are waiting to be photographed.

There’s a side table by my desk where I place supplies I’m planning to use. I would “keep it real” and show you a picture but you can use your imagination. Twine, glue, embellishments, bits of paper with sketches and ideas and possibly a coffee cup or worse…

Part of my organization plan is to make a few pretty boxes for the supplies that I’m using. For this box, I used a cardboard crate. I unfolded the box and using an old light blue pillow case, Mod Podged the fabric to the box. I’m not an experienced Mod Podger and once the box started drying, I could see the air bubbles under the fabric.

I tried to fix the problem by poking pinholes in the fabric and applying another coat of Mod Podge {this is what was recommended on a few sites}. Nope, my air bubbles were there to stay.

What do you do when you when you’ve spent hours on a project and it’s ready for the “craft fail” category? Wrap it in string!

Inkling: new year organizing

There’s something about a new year, new calendar and new start that sparks a desire to clean and organize. There’s been a big focus on organizing tips on a lot of blogs lately.

Every year around this time I get caught up in the organizing frenzy.

One area that was out of control and a mess for me was a lack of a system to organize my blog contacts. When I started this blog, I would jot down notes in a handy notebook. Passwords, user names, contacts all scribbled here and there.

I didn’t want to incorporate these contacts into my general rolodex so I created a separate filing box.

This was a win-win since I used up scraps of crafting paper and bits of supplies. Sweet scrapbook embellishments and trim decorate the divider tabs that I made and stamped A-Z.

I wanted this file system to be fun and cheery. Not like my office rolodex which is very office-like.

Little bits of this and that are sticking out but I can easily find a password or blog contact name.

I filed away the pretty business cards from a few contacts.

Each business card provides a little inspiration.

Each one is unique.

And the personal notes on some of the cards keep me inspired.

The first post-holiday Inspiration Board of 2012 was brimming with wonderful projects. The color palette shifted to a more everyday serene look and I loved seeing a sprinkling of early Valentine’s Day projects.

I have a love affair with all things pastry. Confession…I’ll eat pastry crust plain. So pictures like this just make me insanely hungry. Mini pie stars by A Pumpkin and a Princess.

I got a new sewing machine for Christmas. It’s still in the box. I’m so eager to start sewing again but I just haven’t had the time yet. Describe Happy made this beautiful, super cheerful quilt in one and half weeks for her sister. Amazing!

Alderberry Hill linked a round up of every day tips to make life easier. There are so many great ideas; reuse a wet wipes container to store plastic bags, use the bottom of muffin tins to bake cookie bowls and more.

Beautiful faux stained glass by Screaming Sardine. The colors are so gorgeous and vibrant. Really beautiful!

As I’m cleaning out and organizing I’m trying to think of ways to reuse and repurpose things before throwing them or giving them away. This is a great idea by Sweetwater Style. Make cloth dinner napkins from old drapes. I love the detail stitching on the napkin edge. Note to self: break out that new sewing machine.

I love white on white and this damask wall art is so pretty. Learn how to make this wall art using a stencil and puffy paint at Our Mini Family.

I love all the homemade soaps and scrubs that are popular right now but I haven’t seen these before. Pretty bath fizzies by Sweet Anne. Perfect for a Valentine’s gift or any reason gift.

Beautiful, beautiful photos of holiday mood objects and colors by Beach Comber. This makes me long for summer days at the beach. Absolutely lovely.

Inkling: printable winter birds

I came across the sweetest little bird printables while strolling through blogland.

Winter Birds by Becca Kallem.

I’ve taken down all my holiday décor except for this faux pine garland and these winter birds have now made their home in and around the pine.

Becca offers the free download on her blog. The birds even come with cutting lines. These would make great ornaments for next year or year-round gift tags.

Upcycling: gold leopards to stone leopards

Just like Medusa from Greek mythology, I turned these leopards into stone.

Or at least, faux stone.

When I was sorting through Christmas décor, I found these leopards at the bottom of a box of holiday décor. The leopards are made from paper mache and I think they were a gift. They’ve never worked with out with my holiday look…

I started by covering the leopards with a white paint primer.

To achieve this faux stone look, I mixed the same white paint and some leftover grout.

Once the white paint grout mixture was dry, I distressed the leopards a little. I know there’s special paint you can purchase to give projects a distressed look but I used Martha Stewart Liquid Gilding in silver.

I applied the gilding with a cheap course bristle brush very sparingly and used a toothpick to add a few dots here and there. Close up the gilding has a pretty metallic sheen.

It would be fun to apply this faux stone or as I call it {Medusa} technique to a variety of objects.

Good Taste: leftover candy canes {peppermint sugar cubes}

Do you have leftover candy canes from the holidays?

With all the delicious homemade treats and goodies the candy canes rarely get eaten. I usually end up throwing them away after Christmas.

I decided to put them to use this year and make peppermint sugar. Then I remembered that Vanessa over at Nifty Thrifty Things made some cute sugar cubes awhile back and decided to make the peppermint sugar into sugar cubes.

Here’s how to make peppermint sugar or peppermint sugar cubes.

Take about {6} candy canes and pulse them in your food processor until they are ground up. Add 1/2 cup granulated sugar and pulse until blended with the candy canes. Stop here if you just want peppermint sugar.

Since I was making sugar cubes, I removed the larger chunks of peppermint. Drizzle a teaspoon of water into the mixture and blend together. Add drops of water until the mixture is moist – too moist and the sugar will dissolve.

Press the moistened sugar into candy molds or small ice cube trays. Tip: I used wax paper to press the sugar into the mold since it’s so sticky. Let the cubes dry overnight and remove them from the molds.

I made a variety of shapes. The hearts would be fun for Valentines Day.

I had some leftover peppermint sugar and made these cute marshmallow kabob stir sticks for hot chocolate. Use a little of drizzle of tube frosting and roll the kabob in the sugar mixture.

Add a cube to your favorite hot beverage and enjoy!

Celebrations: new year resolution bottles

If you’re having a New Year’s Eve party, these would make great party favors for your guests.

Upcycle bottles {left} or purchase little travel size containers {right} to make resolution holders. Or use a variety of bottles – mismatched bottles would make an interested table display.

Type up and print out New Year’s resolution papers. Guests can write down their goals for the new year.

Once your guests write down their resolutions or dreams, roll them up and pop them into the bottle.

For the upcycled bottle use a piece of corrugated cardboard rolled up to seal the bottle.

Guests can take home their bottles and their dreams.

Even if you’re not having a party, this would be a fun activity for the family. Keep the bottles and see how you did in a year.

Upcycling: silver animal jars

I'm taking a break from all the holiday projects. I wanted to make something fun and whimsical and these definitely fit the bill - plus they can be used for decorating or organizing.

Many of you may have seen the fantastic, colorful painted animal jars {photo above} that have made their way around the craft blogs and Pinterest. They’re from House to Home and have been featured many, many times.

Like many of you, I fell in love with these adorable jars and decided to make my own grown up versions. I used smaller jars that were originally sample make up and lotions. The animals are the cheap plastic toy animals that can be found at local discount stores or dollar stores. I used a sheep, pig and cow from a farmyard set.

For the pig and sheep, I used Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Metallic paint in Sterling.

The original lettering on my jars wouldn’t come off so I wrapped embroidery floss around the jars and painted the floss in the matching silver paint. Of course it would be easier if you have silver embroidery floss which I didn’t.

For the cow, I used Folk Art Enamels Glitter paint in Silver.

I’m planning on using these jars to organize a few of my supplies like beads and paper clips. There’s something about these little animals that are just irresistible and they’ll be fun to look at everyday.

Celebrations: new year’s countdown & confetti

Christmas is over and you know what that means... the new year is around the corner. This year has flown by so quickly but I guess I say that every year.

If you’re planning to ring in the new year with friends and family, here’s a fun party accessory that’s easy to make.

Little countdown matchboxes filled with confetti.

I wrapped my matchboxes in different colored foil paper. This paper came in an origami paper set but any festive paper will do.

You can buy confetti or use saved up paper punches from your crafting projects. My micro paper punch has a holder that stores the little punches. Luckily, I’ve been punching a lot of tags and paper lately.

Add some twine or ribbon and the countdown numbers.

Make as many sets of {10-1} that you’ll need so that each guest will have a box of confetti to toss at midnight. The more guests… the more vacuuming you’ll have to do in the morning!

This is a project that’s been on my list and Live Love brings us a wonderful step-by-step tutorial with lots of pictures of the process…and gorgeous faux mercury glass results.

Oh my… this is a trifecta of goodness. Beautiful photography, beautiful styling and a pastry that sounds delicious. Egg Nog Tarts by Silver Boxes.

Johnnie at Saved by Love Creations has become quite the rolled magazine artist. She’s made some amazing pieces and I just love this heart dish. Head on over to her blog to see all her paper magazine goodies.

Super cute wine charms by Paper Vine. These are made from Vintage Vogue Spool Buttons and have such a great look to them.

The Lazy Hobby Hopper whipped up this yummy looking lemon cake with Italian meringue frosting. It looks so light – I’m sure it would be harmless to have a piece or three.

I spotlighted this project several months ago when Mrs. Happy Homemaker first whipped up her batch of homemade vanilla extract. I’m so glad she linked up the final product now that the vanilla is ready after three to six months storing time. A great gift idea – either make well in advance and gift ready-to-use vanilla or give with instructions on how to store the vanilla until it is ready to use.

Etceteras: holiday card holder

One of my favorite things about the holidays is receiving cards. It’s so fun to go to the mailbox and see all those envelopes that are filled with good wishes and happy sentiments.

There are so many ways to display all the pretty cards. I’ve hung them from ribbon, taped them to walls and propped them on shelves. This year, in a less-is-more effort, I decided to make a little card holder basket for all of the cards.

I started with a silver bread basket and embellished it with natural and faux materials. Since I want to reuse this bread basket, I first used masking tape along the top edge to protect the rim.

I used my glue gun and added moss, seed pods, twigs and silver berries. A vintage crochet doily lines the basket.

Simple candles add a warm and festive touch.

A handful of candy canes for a little splash of holiday color and sweetness.

The photos and happy greetings really make this the most wonderful time of the year.

Celebrations: tart tin place cards

I have a set of vintage tart tins that I haven’t used in years. When you don’t have time to bake, the next best thing is to use your tart tins for place cards.

Here they are in the original box. My mom passed them down to me. She still makes pies and cakes and other goodies but I don’t remember her ever making little tartlets. But based on the condition of the box, it looks like they were well used.

The little tart tins come in a variety of shapes. Just looking at them makes me want to make some berry tarts.

In the meantime, these little tins will be used for my holiday place cards.

I used craft glue to hold down the moss. That way, when I’m done, a good soaking will clean up the tins. I added a few decorative floral berries, a sprig of evergreen and simple black and white place card.

Sweet little tart tin place cards – but not nearly as sweet as homemade berry tarts.

This coffee filter wreath by A Woman’s Haven is gorgeous. No skimping on coffee filters here…it’s super fluffy and the silver glitter letters say it all.

This sweater remake by Inspiration Realisation looks straight off the catwalk. A true labor of love cutting all the leather circles and stitching them on.

Beautiful Hanukkah projects.

Top – Let there be light calendar by Yesterday on Tuesday. Sweet hang tags embellished with numbers for each night the menorah is lit. The back of each tag has a message with a way to “give light back to others”. A lovely and giving project.

Bottom – A beautiful Hanukkah card by the Answer is Chocolate. Handmade cards are so nice to receive and this one is so pretty with all the glittery detail.

I’ve seen a few placemat-to-pillow projects but I just love this one by Just Another Hang Up. The red cross stitched snowflakes are the perfect touch and this pillow can be used all winter long.

A Pumpkin and a Princess made these cute Christmas trees by wrapping the cone in glittery fabric and adding a ric rac base. So smart and so much easier than using glue and glitter.

I love the look of natural beauty on Christmas trees and these dried orange ornaments by Our Everyday Art are magical. I bet the pine, cinnamon and orange scent is amazing.

What a unique idea! A wine cork keychain by Artful Panoply. Upcycle wine corks with washers, eye screws and beads for a super stocking stuffer.

A beautiful winter night village made out of old wood by Artdrops. The village houses have so much character and the varying shades of night sky really set the scene for the winter night.

I really want a piece of this crisp coconut and chocolate pie…right.now. The deep rich chocolate and slightly browned coconut look heavenly. Head over to Feeding My Temple for the recipe.

Oh my…how cute is this little vintage truck and bottle brush tree? Salvaged Whimsy showcases these little goodies and calls them the “Cutest Christmas Idea” and I agree.
