Inkling: paper mache confetti bowl

Confetti Bowl 7I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s very hard for me to throw away scraps of paper. I wouldn’t exactly classify it as hoarding but it could become a problem if I don’t use up the bits and pieces. This bowl wasn’t made out of paper scraps but paper catalogs. When I attended CHA in January, I came home with a lot of catalogs. The paper catalogs have pages and pages of pictures of pretty paper. How could I throw those away?

Using a 1 inch circle punch, I punched lots of circles from the catalogs and made the large bowl in the first photo and two small cups.

To make a confetti bowl or confetti cups, you’ll need:
  • Paper Scraps
  • 1 inch circle punch
  • Paper Mache Paste (see recipe below)
  • Mod Podge Gloss

This paper mache recipe is fantastic. I’ve posted the recipe before and used it in several projects including this yarn bowl.
Paper Mache Recipe
  • Combine ½ cup flour and 2 cups cold water in a bowl.
  • Boil 2 cups of water in a sauce pan and add the flour and cold water mixture. Bring to a boil again.
  • Remove from heat and add 3 tablespoons of sugar.
  • Let cool. The paste will thicken as it cools.

Once the paste is cool enough to work with start adding your paper. I used a round vase covered in plastic wrap as a form.

Keep covering your form until you are satisfied with your shape. Once your paper mache is dry, carefully remove it from the form by gently peeling the plastic wrap away from the form.

Paper Mache Confetti BowlIf any of the paper tears, just cut some more circles and glue them over the torn areas.
Paper Mache Confetti BowlFor these two little cups, I used small ceramic pots as a form.

Paper Mache Confetti BowlTo finish the confetti bowl, I gave it two coats of Gloss Mod Podge.

Paper Mache Confetti BowlYou can fill the bowl with fun objects for an added seasonal touch.

Paper Mache Confetti BowlOr just leave it plain so you can also enjoy the inside of the bowl.

Thanks for visiting.

  10. Wow!! I just adore this Carolyn! I don't like doing paper crafts at all, but this one I might have to try! This is probably a silly question - but how long did you let it dry before you removed it from the bowl form?

    1. Because I used scraps from catalogs, the paper was printed on both sides. If you are using one-sided paper, you'll want to make sure there's a pretty pattern facing the inside of the bowl and than add another layer of paper facing out (for the outside)

  46. I am not lucky enough to have paper catalogues, but I have plenty of magazines.
I have cats. Cats like boxes - in fact my 18-year old is lying half in / half out of a box on its side, her best spot when she wants to be near me. I'm thinking this confetti would beautify her abode.

    1. So sorry your project didn't work out. I had some slight tears that I reference in the post and just covered them up with more paper circles.
